Mexico, and the Yucatan region in particular, is known for its beautiful beaches, Mayan ruins, fresh water cenotes, ceviche and the occasional mariachi band. It also happens to offer some of the best and most diverse salt water fly fishing in the world.
While shooting video and taking photos for an upcoming book on fly fishing in the Yucatan, SUPonthefly’s founder, John Rounds, had the opportunity to spend 14 days visiting Mexico’s premiere fishing destinations. The team visited legendary fishing locales such as Rio Lagartos, Isla Holbox, Isla Blanca, Cozumel, Boca Paila, Punta Allen, Mahahual, and Xcalak. John ended the trip by fishing his way from Xcalak to San Pedro, Belize. John says, “Any fly fishing excursion that includes a passport as part of your daily gear is a lot of fun!”
Salt water fly fishing is high on the bucket list for most anglers. Once you’ve experienced it, it’s easy to see why. Searching for tarpon, bonefish, permit and barracuda on the flats is elating. Fishing with poppers beach side and looking for Crevalle Jack’s and Snook while standing in the surf is an exciting experience as well. Whether you are a flats rat or love standing in the surf, salt water fly fishing is an adventure as well as an opportunity to see a wide variety of wildlife and sea life.
In most regions, this type of fishing requires staying in a lodge. For the dedicated, hardcore fisherman, life in a fishing lodge can be a fantastic experience. But if you have a non-fishing spouse or family in tow, you will want to find an area that offers entertainment other than angling. In addition to world class salt water fly fishing, the Yucatan Peninsula offers great food, gorgeous Caribbean beaches, Mayan ruins, underground rivers, zip lining, adventure parks, snorkeling, 6,000 Cenotes, great ceviche and beer.
There are several areas around the Yucatan Peninsula where you can marry your love for fly fishing with rich culture and cuisine. Some of these areas include Rio Lagartos, Isla Holbox, Isla Blanca, Cozumel, Boca Paila, Punta Allen, Mahahual, and Xcalak. Each of these locations offer different fishing experiences as well as a range of activities. If you would like more detailed information on each of these locations please follow @yucatanonthefly on Facebook and or sign up for our exclusive emails.
We consistently provide fishing updates, gear tests, and special offers to our growing community of SUP adventurers and fisherman.
We hope you have the opportunity to experience salt water Yucatan fly fishing in the future. We promise you will not be disappointed.
