When guiding, I am often ask by the client if their girlfriend or boyfirend can come along and be comfortable. I have always been willing to accommodate that request and now it is much easier to say definitely, “YES”! Most stand up paddle boards have ample space to carry folding chairs and an umbrella in addition to a cooler for those cold frosty beverages that we all love, mostly beer.
Additionally, many SUPs are fitted with D-rings and bungee cord to strap down additional comfort items. Most of the time, I am using my SUP to get the clients and equipment to a place on the flats where we can make camp and have a place to rest and relax.
There are many versions of the folding camping chair that work. Just make sure you get ones with a broader plastic base so you don’t sink down into the sand. The cooler is another important choice. First, make sure it is the right size to fit between your SUP D-rings or at least be in a balanced positioned in the center. Not only will the cooler keep your food and drinks cold, but it will act at a seat and excellent poling platform.
Many times I find myself guiding from the platform picking out fish while the client walks in the water next to me.
Whether you are fishing the flats for Bones and Permit, or fishing the beaches for Snook and Jacks, a SUP set up with all the right equipment can provide for a very comfortable situation.
I would also suggest that buying an inflatable SUP is the way to go for easy storage and certainly travel.
Speaking of travel, there are many great places on the Yucatan where you can find great fishing opportunities on a SUP. The Sian Kaan biosphere is one of the best. For accommodations, Akumal Villas is a great place to rent a villa as your base camp for all your great SUP on the fly adventures.
