Forget the bad ties and the car wash coupons, SUPonthefly, a Western New York company, has an exciting way to spend Father’s Day weekend and get ready for a summer of water-filled thrills.
In collaboration with SUPonthefly, Adventure Bound outdoor store in Ellicottville will host a paddle sports weekend June 17 & 18, featuring free kayak and SUPonthefly stand up paddle board demos, live music and food.
Saturday’s event will be at Spruce Lake above Holiday Valley from 2:00 pm-7:00 pm. Live music will be provided by cousins Zach Carr and Jonah Krull from Tonawanda. Sunday’s event will be held at the Adventure Bound demo pond on Route 219, just north of Ellicottville from 10:00 am-3:00 pm. Live music will be provided by Molly & The Lavender Kings.
The highlight of the paddle sports weekend event will be the introduction of a new line of inflatable SUPs from Ellicottville-based business, SUPonthefly. SUPonthefly has spent two years testing and producing boards with unique stability and design requirements to meet the needs of the fly fishing community. This year’s line will feature a stomp box that allows the center fin to automatically retract in shallow water or when bumping up against rocks in a river. SUPonthefly will be one of the only manufacturers in the world to feature this technology.
“Western New York has some of the most magnificent water resources in the world. People who enjoy our lakes, rivers and streams for fishing and fun will now be able to experience the water like never before,” said John Rounds, founder of SUPonthefly.
SUPonthefly is an adventure-oriented team that focuses on maximizing the portability of inflatable SUPs. In January, a team of four SUPonthefly Brand Ambassadors and a Chilean guide fished and explored the Patagonia region of Chile on inflatable SUPonthefly boards. The team’s accomplishments included the first descents of several Patagonian rivers on a SUP. The journey to Patagonia included travel by commercial airline, Cessna, bus, car, and even ox cart.
SUPonthefly boards are under the 50lb. threshold for checked baggage on airlines, making them the perfect choice for adventure travel. In April, SUPonthefly founders, John and Christy Rounds, took their family to Lake Atitlan in Guatemala where they had the chance test three new SUPonthefly boards: theSUPonthefly Guide, SUPonthefly Streamer, and SUPonthefly River Nymph. Since most villages on the lake are only accessible by boat, this region was ideal for testing the versatility of the SUPs.
In May, John Rounds and SUPonthefly brand ambassador, Ty Simic, explored the high country of Peru, including Lake Titicaca and the headwaters of the Amazon River, on SUPonthefly boards. Simic hold an unofficial world record as the first person to circumnavigate Lake Titicaca on a SUP.
SUPonthefly boards include durable wheeled duffles with backpack straps, making the boards easy to transport virtually anywhere you can find a path to a lake or river. This makes them ideal for traveling to intentional destinations where boat ramp access can be limited or non-existent.
Unlike many inflatable SUP boards that are made for flat water conditions, SUPonthefly boards use Advanced Rocker Construction (ARC) for superior performance on wavy lakes, rivers and inland waterways. SUPonthefly’s ARC plus and its generous platform makes these boards the best choice for anglers who require extra stability for fishing or to carry extra gear.
SUPonthefly boards have been designed for maximum durability and stability. They have the best weight to cargo / carrying capacity on the market, making them ideally suited to carry coolers, fly fishing gear and heavier paddlers. The SUPonthefly Guide has a cargo capacity of a whopping 650 lbs. They also come with a one year warranty.
